L 104 – Historical Christian Evidence

Course Description

Historical Christian Evidence

This course provides a detailed examination of the historical evidence supporting the Christian faith, particularly the identity, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Rather than appealing to subjective religious experiences or emotional belief, the course investigates Christianity as a historical religion grounded in real events that occurred in human history.

Throughout the twelve lessons, students will explore how historical reasoning, documentary evidence, eyewitness testimony, and logical analysis support the claims of the New Testament. The course emphasizes that Christianity stands or falls on historical facts, especially the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The study begins by addressing the problem of religious subjectivism, the idea that religious truth can be determined simply by personal feelings or experiences. The course demonstrates that such an approach is unreliable and contrasts it with the historical method used to evaluate claims about past events.

Students will then examine how Christianity differs from many other belief systems because it is based on events that occurred in time and space, such as the life, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus. Evidence from pagan historians, Jewish writers, and the New Testament documents is presented to demonstrate that Jesus of Nazareth was a real historical figure who lived and was crucified under the Roman governor Pontius Pilate.

The course also explores the historical reliability of the New Testament, showing that the documents were written during the lifetime of eyewitnesses and circulated widely among early Christians. Evidence from the Apostolic Fathers and the early manuscript tradition demonstrates that the New Testament text has been preserved with remarkable accuracy. Students will also study how textual criticism and manuscript evidence support the integrity of the New Testament writings.

A major portion of the course focuses on the historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Several independent arguments are presented and examined carefully.

One line of evidence is the empty tomb, discovered by the followers of Jesus shortly after the crucifixion. The course examines the presence of a Roman guard at the tomb, the sealing of the stone, and the inability of either Jesus’ enemies or his followers to explain the disappearance of the body. The presence of the grave clothes lying undisturbed in the tomb is also analyzed as evidence that the body was not stolen.

Another important argument concerns the dramatic transformation of the apostles. Before the resurrection, the disciples were confused, fearful, and divided. Yet shortly afterward, on the day of Pentecost, they boldly proclaimed the resurrection of Jesus in Jerusalem itself. This radical change in their understanding, courage, and unity is explained in the course as the result of the coming of the Holy Spirit, which Jesus had promised would guide them into truth.

The course also examines the apostolic testimony as historical evidence. The apostles claimed to be eyewitnesses of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. They testified consistently about these events, and their testimony was given publicly, confirmed by multiple witnesses, and maintained even under severe persecution. The willingness of the apostles to suffer imprisonment and martyrdom rather than deny their testimony strengthens the credibility of their claims.

Another powerful argument studied in the course is the conversion of Saul of Tarsus, later known as the Apostle Paul. Saul was originally a fierce persecutor of Christianity, determined to destroy the church. However, he experienced a dramatic conversion after claiming that he encountered the risen Christ on the road to Damascus. The course explores how Saul’s transformation from persecutor to missionary cannot be easily explained by natural or psychological causes.

Students will also investigate the claims Jesus made about himself, including his authority over his own life and death. Jesus claimed that no one could take his life from him and that he had the power to lay it down and take it again. The course analyzes the events of his crucifixion and shows how the circumstances of his death correspond to these claims, including the unusually short duration of his death on the cross.

Finally, the course addresses modern skeptical theories that attempt to explain the Gospel accounts as myths created by the early church. The “church myth theory”, which claims that belief in a supernatural Jesus developed gradually over decades, is examined and challenged. Historical evidence shows that belief in the resurrection and divinity of Jesus existed from the very beginning of the Christian movement, long before the Gospel accounts were written.

By analyzing the historical evidence presented in these twelve lessons, students will see that the claims of Christianity are not based on legend or myth but on credible historical testimony.

Course Summary

This course demonstrates that Christianity is fundamentally a historical faith based on real events rather than subjective belief. Through a careful study of historical documents, eyewitness testimony, manuscript evidence, and logical reasoning, the course evaluates the central claims of the New Testament.

Students explore multiple lines of evidence supporting the resurrection of Jesus Christ, including the empty tomb, the testimony of the apostles, the transformation of the disciples, the conversion of Paul, and the early belief of the church in a supernatural Jesus.

By examining these historical facts, the course concludes that the most reasonable explanation for the evidence is that Jesus Christ truly rose from the dead. This event confirms his claims to be the Son of God and provides the foundation for the Christian faith.
