L 205 – Biblical Interpretation

Course Introduction

Understanding the Bible correctly is one of the most important responsibilities of every Christian. Throughout history, many people have read the Scriptures yet arrived at very different interpretations. This course on Biblical Interpretation (Sacred Hermeneutics) is designed to provide students with clear principles and practical methods for understanding the Bible as it was originally intended.

The course begins by exploring an important question: Can the Bible truly be understood? While some people believe interpretation depends only on personal spiritual illumination, others claim that every interpretation is equally valid. This course demonstrates that Scripture was given by God to communicate specific truths, and therefore it can and should be understood through careful study and responsible interpretation.

Students will also examine the proper attitude toward the Bible, recognizing it as a unique and authoritative book that reveals God’s will, the way of salvation, and guidance for life. The course emphasizes the importance of approaching Scripture with reverence, humility, and a desire to discover its original meaning.

A major focus of the course is learning the difference between exegesis and hermeneutics. Exegesis involves discovering what a biblical passage meant to its original audience, while hermeneutics explains how those truths apply to believers today. Understanding this distinction is essential for responsible Bible study and for avoiding misinterpretations that arise when modern readers ignore historical context.

Throughout the lessons, students will learn practical study methods such as reading entire books of the Bible carefully, analyzing context, identifying the author’s purpose, and consulting reliable background resources. These methods help readers move beyond superficial reading and develop a deeper, more accurate understanding of Scripture.

The course also explains how biblical authority functions in the life of believers. It explores how commands, examples, and principles found in Scripture guide Christian faith and practice. By examining these elements, students learn how to determine which teachings are essential and how they should be applied today.

Finally, the course addresses the issue of differing interpretations among Christians and highlights the importance of unity around the essential teachings of the faith. By applying sound principles of interpretation, believers can better understand God’s message and grow in their relationship with Him.

By the end of this course, students will gain the tools needed to read the Bible more thoughtfully, interpret it more accurately, and apply its timeless message to their lives.
