L 105 – Thessalonians

Course Summary & Brief

The Letters to the Thessalonians

This course explores the New Testament letters of 1 and 2 Thessalonians, written by the Apostle Paul together with Silas and Timothy. These letters are among the earliest writings of the New Testament, written to encourage a young Christian community in the city of Thessalonica during a time of persecution and spiritual challenges.

The course begins by examining the historical background of Thessalonica, an important commercial city in Macedonia where Paul preached the gospel during his second missionary journey. Through the preaching of Paul, Silas, and Timothy, many people turned from idols to serve the living God, forming a new Christian community. However, the church quickly faced strong opposition and persecution from both Jewish leaders and pagan society.

Throughout the lessons, students will study Paul’s deep pastoral concern for the Thessalonian believers. Because Paul was forced to leave the city earlier than expected, he was worried about the spiritual stability of the new believers. To strengthen them, he sent Timothy to encourage their faith and later wrote these letters after receiving a positive report about their faithfulness.

A major theme of this course is Christian faith expressed through action. Paul praises the Thessalonians for their work produced by faith, labor motivated by love, and endurance inspired by hope. These three virtues—faith, love, and hope—form the foundation of the Christian life and are repeatedly emphasized throughout the letters.

The course also explores important teachings including:

  • The character and integrity of Christian ministry
  • The importance of perseverance during persecution
  • The role of encouragement and spiritual leadership in the church
  • The Christian call to holy living and spiritual growth
  • The hope of Christ’s return and the future glory of believers

Through these lessons, students will gain a deeper understanding of how early Christians lived out their faith in a hostile environment and how Paul guided them with love, wisdom, and spiritual authority.

By studying the Thessalonian letters, this course helps believers today learn how to remain faithful, hopeful, and spiritually strong while waiting for the return of Jesus Christ.
