L 1003 – Biblical Theology of Mission

A Brief Summary

Why this course, because it verifies the biblical foundation for Christian mission and with it the responsibility of believers to spread the gospel. Before Jesus left, he gave The Great Commission in Matthew 28, by which Jesus commands His disciples to go to all nations, to make disciples, to baptize them, and to teach them to keep His commandments. The end-goal of missions is not only conversion but to further develope mature disciples of Christ.

The course emphasizes that missions remain essential as long as there are lost souls. Often modern society prioritizes humanitarian work over evangelism. While helping people’s physical needs is important and the right thing to do, the main focus of the church should should be sharing the gospel in word and deed, leading people to Christ.

Several key theological foundations are highlighted:

1. Authority of Scripture – The Bible (Old and New Testaments) is the only reliable and authoritative revelation from God for guiding faith, ministry, and missions.
2. Centrality of Jesus Christ – Jesus is the Son of God, the only Savior, and the Lord of all. Every person will ultimately face Him as judge, and His authority forms the basis for missionary work.
3. Role of the Church – The church is called to be the “light of the world.” Its responsibility is to share the gospel and support missionary work around the world.
4. Importance of Preaching – Although fields like sociology, psychology, and anthropology can help missions, the preaching of God’s Word remains central and cannot be replaced by human methods.

The course also begins with three major theological presuppositions:

• The sovereignty of God
• The Lordship of Christ
• The ministry of the Holy Spirit
