L 901 Excellence in Leadership

📘 Course Introduction

✨ Brief

This course explores what Christian excellence in leadership really is, as Jesus taught it and modeled it for His church.

Through 12 structured lessons, students will see the difference between worldly success and spiritual leadership, and learn why leaders in the body of Christ are servants, shepherds, and stewards rather than rulers.

The course moves from worldly power to servant leadership—teaching believers how to lead God’s people by example, love, and the Word of God.

📖 Full Course Summary

Leadership in the church is not a political office or a position of control. It is a family relationship and a life of service. This course provides a structured journey through the key Bible texts on leadership, helping believers understand who leads the church, what leaders are for, and how new leaders are developed.

🔹 What Leadership Is Not (Foundation)

The course begins with Jesus’ words in Luke 22: “You are not to be like that.” Spiritual leadership is not:

  • A political power play or a race for office
  • An authoritarian attitude that lords it over others
  • Cultic control by a few over the many

Instead, leadership is pictured as family life (1 Thessalonians 2): a mother’s nurture, a brother’s example, and a father’s love.

👉 The natural leader runs an institution—the spiritual leader serves in the body of Christ

🔹 The Church as the Body of Christ

Leadership can only be understood in the light of what the church is:

  • Jesus is the only Head of the body (Ephesians 1:22-23)
  • The church is a living organism, not just an organization
  • Every member is gifted for the common good
  • Jesus continues His life and mission in His people today

👉 Human leaders must never intrude into the headship of Christ

🔹 Allegiance and Community

Strong leadership grows out of loyal relationships:

  • Allegiance to the Father in prayer and worship
  • Allegiance to the Spirit in using our gifts
  • Allegiance to Jesus in obeying His teaching
  • Allegiance to one another in love

👉 God’s plan for His work is people—not programs

🔹 The Purpose of Leaders

Ephesians 4 shows why God gave leaders to the church:

  • To equip the saints for works of service
  • To build up the body of Christ
  • To bring believers to unity and maturity
  • To fulfill the prime directive: make disciples of all nations

👉 Leaders equip people for service—not for management

🔹 The Words That Define a Leader

The New Testament describes leaders with humble words:

  • Servant / slave (doulos) – the purchased possession of Christ
  • Deacon (diakonos) – one who waits on tables and meets needs
  • Under-rower (huperetes) – the lowest worker in the ship
  • Steward – faithful manager of God’s Word and God’s people
  • Shepherd – one who feeds, heals, protects, and seeks the lost

👉 Serve, slave, sacrifice: that is excellence in leadership

🔹 Developing Leaders

The course gives a practical path for growing spiritual leaders:

  • Personal Bible study as the foundation
  • Sharing the Word with others
  • Small group study where people grow together
  • Discipling others who will teach others also (2 Timothy 2:2)

👉 Leaders are made by being with people, as Jesus was with the Twelve

🔹 Leading by Example

The greatest tool of a leader is a life worth copying:

  • Jesus’ example in service, obedience, prayer, and suffering
  • Paul’s example: “Imitate me, as I imitate Christ”
  • Timothy’s example: a timid young man who became a faithful leader

👉 People follow what they see more than what they hear

🔹 Key Principle of the Course

👉 The greatest among you must be the servant of all

Service → builds trust
Example → inspires growth
Love → creates unity
